HarmonyOS, the operating system developed by Huawei, is compatible with Android applications. Nevertheless, the Chinese group assures that its mobile OS is not a shameless copy of the Google system. To clarify the situation, a Huawei executive sent a lengthy explanatory statement to Chinese developers.
A few days ago, Huawei lifted the veil on the final and stable version of HarmonyOS . This end product looks a lot like Android, right down to its Easter Eggs . From an interface and code point of view, HarmonyOS stands out as a simple fork of Android , or new software based on the source code of existing software. In this case: AOSP (Android Open Source Project).
Moreover, HarmonOS is able to run without any difficulty an application initially developed for Android , confirming the accusations of detractors of Huawei. To defend itself from having simply aped AOSP, the Chinese group has stepped up to the plate.
HUAWEI WANTS A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM ANDROID TO HARMONYOS
Eric Xu, the current president of Huawei, addressed the Chinese developer community in a statement. “In order to protect the digital assets of existing Huawei mobile phone and tablet users, HarmonyOS 2 allows existing Android applications to run on certain devices equipped with the system,” says Eric Xu. Concretely, Huawei wants to smooth the transition from Android to HarmonyOS .
Initially, the manufacturer has no other choice than to allow Android applications to run on its modular OS. If Huawei had come up with an entirely new operating system without building on the foundations of Android, the offering of compatible apps on its devices through AppGallery would have been meager . In this case, Huawei would have been forced to expand its ecosystem for several more years before it could hope to seduce users. Ultimately, the current approach of the Chinese manufacturer accelerates the transition.
Note that Huawei is not in a position to take its time. The US sanctions decreed in 2019 and the loss of its Android license caused a collapse in phone sales . Huawei has also been ejected from the top 5 of the most important manufacturers in the world . Under these conditions, the Schenzen giant has done everything so that HarmonyOS can take over from Android as soon as possible.
