Nvidia has started releasing an update for the Shield. This notably modifies the interface of the Box by bringing it closer to the new standards imposed by Google TV. A Discovery tab appears. And the presentation of the channels is evolving. The update is coming to the United States and it will gradually be pushed to Europe.
Nvidia’s Shield TV is a separate product. As much for its manufacturer, who is more used to selling very specific computer equipment, as for its users. Because, the Shield TV is, without a doubt, the best box under Android TV . Thanks to its power. Thanks to its ecosystem. And thanks to its lifespan. Nvidia keeps its Shields up to date for a very long time. And that makes you very happy.
The American firm also seems to be quite free in its choices as to the software evolution of the Shield. Kind of like Amazon. Even though its products are certified by Google, Nvidia seems to have the freedom to choose what changes it wants to make. Almost a year ago, when the new Android TV interface landed in the televisions of several major brands (notably Sony), the Shield ignored this forced advertising space . But it was only a postponement.
THE INTERFACE LOOKS LIKE GOOGLE TV, BUT IT’S NOT GOOGLE TV
This week, a Shield TV update is being pushed by Nvidia. This update includes some new ergonomic features brought by Google TV (which replaces Android TV since the officialization of the last Chromecast , in the fall of 2020). In particular, we find these large illustrations at the top of the interface to promote certain programs. We also find a new tab called ” Discovery “, which seems to be promotional. A bit like the ” For you ” tab .
Two other small modifications are to be discovered. First, the icons to the left of the channels have disappeared. This is also the case in Google TV. And the “ Applications ” tab simply becomes “ Apps ”. You will notice, however, that the tabs are much less numerous here. Also, there is no Google TV mention at the top left. Nvidia therefore opts here for an interface that is less intrusive, but which still brings modernity.
The United States is obviously the first to take advantage of this interface. But Canada, France , UK, Australia and Germany will follow. Likewise for Italy and Spain. However, these latter two countries will have the chance to escape the Discovery tab. But for how long?
