3800 PS4 used to mine cryptocurrency have just been seized by law enforcement agencies in Ukraine. Faced with the shortage of graphics cards, miners have apparently found a way to exploit Sony consoles.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) has just acquired an underground cryptocurrency mining farm , reports Tom’s Hardware. The miners had settled in an old warehouse in order to operate the electricity network discreetly with fake meters. The losses of the electricity supplier amount to 7 million hryvnia, the national currency of Ukraine.
It is not uncommon for unscrupulous cryptocurrency miners to seek to reduce their energy costs in this way. Last February, Bitcoin (BTC) miners were arrested for stealing € 1.7 million worth of electricity in Malaysia. Indeed, cryptocurrency mining consumes a large amount of electrical energy. To generate currencies like Bitcoin, miners use computers capable of constantly performing complex calculations.
MINERS SUCCESSFULLY MINE CRYPTOS WITH PS4S
“Nearly 5,000 units of computer equipment were seized” explains the Ukrainian police, assuring that it is “the largest underground crypto-farm discovered” by the police . SSU agents seized more than 500 graphics cards and 50 processors. More surprisingly, the authorities discovered 3800 PS4 running continuously .
Everything suggests that miners have discovered a way to mine cryptocurrency with home consoles . We imagine that the infrastructure was designed to mine Ether (ETH), the second most valued crypto on the market behind Bitcoin. It is theoretically possible to mine Ether with a PlayStation 4 but the yields look ridiculous compared to those of a graphics card.
Managers of the mining farm have probably switched to PlayStation 4s in response to the shortage of graphics cards . In the space of a quarter, digital currency miners monopolize more than 700,000 graphics cards . The appetite of miners for GPUs has contributed to the worsening shortage and the explosion in prices.
